The Rider's Mark

“Escort runes. They come alight in the presence of a bonded Rider…
I have not witnessed their light since the late Queen.
Many of the villagers have never witnessed the lights in their lifetimes.”

-Amatheia (Upon arrival)

The use of Runes is first visible in the Labyrinth outskirts of the Water Nation trenches. The steep, sharp stones that create a maze in the landscape are dappled with carvings that glow an iridescent blue when activated.

The same markings are seen just past the Water Nation's village, in the tunnel leading up to the main temple. The presence of a human or other entity with the marking of a Rider is required to activate the runes.

The nation's queen, Naga, had become the first of the nation's kind to form a bond with the two-legged kind in a contractual sense. A young elf, Arris, would become the first proclaimed dragon Rider for the Water Nation. Ever since this union, the territory shows signs of where the queen had carved out safe spaces, passageways, and other accommodations to preserve him in the harsh environment. The runes encountered on the way to the temple are one of Naga's many stepping stones to aid the young man.

Long after the Rider's passing, the runes are still active and present.

“It was a custom long ago, to the Riders of Nightwing that their partner would grant them a gift in the form of a marking… It was a symbol of partnership, not to mention, they could hold certain magical properties."

- Spencer (Explanation of Yuna's gift)

The territory is also littered with environments built for Arris' comfort and ability to stay under the ocean long-term. The Rider was able to breathe safely within the bounds of Naga's magic. There are pockets of vast plant life and dry spaces to allow for sleep, relaxation, and study.

The temple also hosts a gateway that allows for direct passage into Nightwing, accessible to Riders or Mages that may have been taught.
